   HOME REPAIRS & ELDERLY RESIDENTS 

  • Council on Aging for Henderson County
    • The Council on Aging is a private, non-profit agency made up of professional social workers and support staff who assist older adults with services that enable them to live in their own homes for as long as possible. The Council on Aging also oversees the County-wide delivery of the Meals on Wheels program and the congregate meals program at the Sammy Williams Center.
  • NC Weatherization Assistance Program
    • The Weatherization Assistance Program assists low-income families and individuals through the installation of energy conservation materials and implementation of energy efficient measures within homes. The program also directs services towards the elderly, disabled, high energy users, and those who are energy burdened. 

   MENTAL HEALTH & EMERGENCY SUPPORT 

  • Hendersonville Rescue Mission
    • The Hendersonville Rescue Mission offers emergency shelter for men, women, and children for a minimum three-night stay. The Rescue Mission is also home to Ann's Place; transitional housing for mothers and children seeking independent living after the completion of a six-month program
  • Thrive Hendersonville
    • Thrive Hendersonville assists those struggling with mental illness in various aspects of life, such as transitional employment opportunities, housing case management, and financial management support. 
  • Safelight 24/7 Shelter & Hotline  
    • Safelight is a 24/7-staffed shelter for those experiencing a variety of hardships. Services offered at Safelight include; Case management, Counseling, Support groups, Emergency room advocacy, Court advocacy, Law enforcement accompaniment, Child medical exams, Forensic interviews, Job Training, and Housing Support. Currently, the shelter contains 40 beds with additional space for cribs/bassinets.    LEGAL SUPPORT & COUNSELING 

  • Pisgah Legal Services
    • Pisgah Legal Services provides free legal assistance and advocacy to low-income individuals throughout the region. The Hendersonville Office can be reached at (828) 692-7622 and is located at 440 S Church Street. Services are also offered in Spanish / los servicios también están en español. 
  • On Track Financial Education and Counseling of WNC
    • On Track provides individual counseling and education in areas related to homeownership, such as: credit counseling, financial budget counseling, debt counseling, home equity counseling, and more. 
  • The Mediation Center WNC
    • The Mediation Center is a nonprofit organization that offers conflict resolution services as well as a Family Visitation Program.

What is Affordable Housing? 

 

According to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a housing unit is generally considered affordable when it does not cost more than 30% of a household's gross income. 

Affordable housing can also be a form of subsidized housing; when rents are reduced due to a government program. Public housing, project-based Section 8, Section 8 vouchers, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, the State Housing Trust Fund, down payment assistance, and reduced mortgage interest rates are also types of subsidized housing programs. Subsidized or affordable housing does not mean a reduction in housing quality, nor does it determine the location and type of housing.
