At 11:30 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2010, Henderson County Manager, Steve Wyatt, declared a State of Emergency for Henderson County due to public safety hazards relating to the continuing ice storm. The State of Emergency will continue until emergency service officials advise otherwise. According to emergency service officials the weather is projected to worsen in the early afternoon with increased icing. Currently there are 12,600 residents in Henderson County without power, with that number rapidly increasing by the hour. For those residents without power, the Henderson County Chapter of the Red Cross is opening a shelter at First Baptist Church in Hendersonville (312 Fifth Avenue West) at 1:00 p.m.. For more information regarding the shelter, please contact the Red Cross at (828) 693-5605. Law Enforcement officials are strongly urging individuals to stay off the roads. If you chose to drive we ask that you be aware of your surroundings. Many trees and power lines have fallen, as some roads in Henderson County have been closed for safety reasons. Do not attempt to drive over or approach down power lines. These lines are treated as “live” until energy officials have deemed otherwise.
