The Department of Social Services recruits under an open recruitment policy. Applications are accepted at any time for any classification even if there is no current vacancy. There are no deadline dates for applying. Instead, hiring decisions will be made from the applications on hand when a job opening occurs. Recruitment ads may be advertised if current applicant pool is not sufficient. See below for classification titles, requirements and salaries.

The County Administrative Office is open from 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM.

Accounting Technician III – Grade 71 - $15.89
Performing a variety of accounting clerical functions. Maintains complex general accounting books requiring segregation of monies and expenditures into a number of accounts.
Requirements include: Graduation from high school including or supplemented by basic courses in bookkeeping or accounting and four years experience in bookkeeping or accounting clerical work in an accounting office; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (Graduation from a four year college or university with a major in business administration may be substituted for the required experience; or a two year degree in business administration or accounting from a community college or business college may be substituted for three of the four years experience; or completion of a one year course including or supplemented by courses in bookkeeping or accounting may be substituted for two years of the required experience.)

COMPUTING SUPPORT TECHNICIAN I – Grade 67 - $13.58
Under general supervision, employee performs tasks to aid in the on-going support of computer users. 
Requirements include
:  Graduation from high school and a minimum of three years of experience in the use of computing September 20, 2007ination of training and experience.  Must be proficient in Windows Environment, MS Office (Word, Excel and Access).  Ethernet LAN experience a plus. Knowledge of AS/400 operation, Novell IntranetWare, Powerchute, and HTML preferred.

COMPUTING SUPPORT TECHNICIAN II  - Grade 69 -  $14.69
Performs tasks to aid in the on-going support of computer users.  Provides hardware and software support to users. 

Requirements include
Graduation from high schSeptember 20, 2007 computing and information technology resources; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Must be proficient in Windows Environment, MS Office (Word, Excel and Access).  Ethernet LAN experience a plus. Knowledge of AS/400 operation, Novell IntranetWare, Powerchute, and HTML preferred.

COMPUTER SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR I – Grade 74 - $ 17.87
Coordinates and manages the computer system for the Henderson County Department of Social Services.  This involves hardware management, coordination of software needs for the system users, resolving equipment/communications problems. Provides recommendations and guidance for design, development, acquisition and implementation of information resource management tools. 
Requirements include:  Graduation from high school and two years of experience in the administration of a computer system using Novell Netware.  Must be proficient in Windows Environment, MS Office (Word, Excel and Access).  Ethernet LAN experience a plus. Knowledge of AS/400 operation, Novell IntranetWare, Powerchute, and HTML preferred.

INCOME MAINTENANCE CASEWORKER I – Grade 65 - $12.56
Responsible for determining and/or redetermining applicants’/clients’ eligibility for one or more of the income maintenance programs (Food Stamps, Medicaid, etc.)  in the county Department of Social Services. 

Requirements Include
: Graduation from an accredited associate degree program in Human Services, Social Services Associate, Paralegal Technology, Business Administration, Secretarial Science or a closely related curriculum; or graduation for high school and three years of paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience which includes negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, the gathering and compiling of data, the analysis of data and /or the performance of mathematical or legal tasks;  
or equivalent combination of training and experience.

INCOME MAINTENANCE CASEWORKER II –Grade 67 -  $13.58

Requirements Include:

INCOME MAINTENANCE CASEWORKER III – Grade 69 - $14.69
This is a Lead position.  In addition to being responsible for determining and/or redetermining applicants’/clients’ eligibility for one or more of the income maintenance programs, also resolves client appeals of actions, performs analysis of data and trains new caseworkers.
Requirements Include: Graduation from an accredited associate degree program in Human Services, Social Services Associate, Paralegal Technology, Business Administration, Secretarial Science or a closely related curriculum AND TWO YEARS of experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker; or graduation for high school and three years of paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience which includes negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, the gathering and compiling of data, the analysis of data and /or the performance of mathematical or legal tasks AND TWO YEARS of experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker;  or equivalent combination of training and experience.

INCOME MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR II – Grade 71 - $15.89
Responsible for the administrative and technical supervision of a small staff of Income Maintenance Caseworkers.
Requirements include
:  Three years of experience as a caseworker or investigator in an Income Maintenance program, preferably with one year of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. This position supervises the following program areas: Workfirst Assistance, Food Stamps, Family and Children's Medicaid, Low Income Energy Assistance and the Crisis Intervention Program.

SOCIAL WORKER I – Grade 68 - $14.12
Entry level Social Worker providing conventional services to clients who have obvious problems requiring well-established patterns of service.  Services are provided through a variety of programs in human service agencies.  
Requirements include: Graduation from a four-year college or university.   Degree must be in a human services field; or basic 4 year degree plus one year of directly related experience;or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

SOCIAL WORKER II – Grade 72 - $16.52
Providing professional social work services to clients in a variety of settings.  Work may include evaluating client’s situation, developing a social history, assessment, and treatment plan and counseling with the client. 
Requirements include:
 Graduation from a four-year college or university with a BSW; or four year degree in a human services field, plus one year of directly related experience; or basic 4 year degree plus two years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

SOCIAL WORKER III – Grade 74 - $17.87

Providing professional social work services to clients in a variety of settings.  Work may include evaluating client’s situation, developing a social history, assessment, and treatment plan and counseling with the client. 
Requirements include:
  Must have a MSW from an accredited school of social work; or a BSW from an accredited school of social work and one year of experience in social work or counseling; or a four-year degree in a human services field and two years experience; or graduation from a four-year college or university and three years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling or related human service field providing experience in the techniques of case work, group work or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

CPS SOCIAL WORKER INVESTIGATIVE ASSESSMENT – Grade 76 - $19.33
Providing professional social work services to clients in a variety of settings.  Work may include evaluating client’s situation, developing a social history, assessment, and treatment plan and counseling with the client. 

Requirements include:
   
Must have a MSW from an accredited school of social work and one year of experience in social work or counseling; or a BSW from an accredited school of social work and two years experience in social work or counseling; or a Master's degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling; or a four-year degree in a human services field and three years experience; or graduation from a four-year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling or related human service field providing experience in the techniques of case work, group work or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

SOCIAL WORK SUPERVISOR II – Grade 75 - $36,231.00 annual salary
Supervision of a group of Social Workers who provide direct services to clients. 
Requirements Include
:  Master's degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work or counseling experience; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a Master's degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a four-year degree in a human services field and three years of social work or counseling; or graduation from a four-year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or a related human services field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work, or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

SOCIAL WORK SUPERVISOR III  - Grade 78 - $40,755.00 Annual Salary
Supervision of a group of Social Workers who provide direct services to clients. 

Requirements Include
Master's degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited school of social work and three years of social work or counseling experience; or a Master's degree in a counseling field and three years of social work or counseling experience; or a four-year degree in a human services field and four years of social work or counseling; or graduation from a four-year college or university and five years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or a related human services field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work, or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

YOUTH PROGRAM ASSISTANT I   - Grade 64 -  $12.07
Work with children at the County’s Youth Home. 
Requirements include
: High school graduation and two years of experience working with emotionally or mentally handi­capped clients with emphasis on behavioral management, OR an associate degree in a human services field and one year of experience working with emotionally or mentally handicapped clients; OR a four-year degree and one year of experience; OR a four-year degree in a human services field; OR equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must pass physical examination, background investigation and drug-screen analysis. Must possess valid North Carolina driver's license. May include nights and weekends.

HUMAN SERVICES COORDINATOR II – Grade 71 - $15.89
Responsible for ensuring that each youth placed with the youth home receives the necessary services. Services include crisis care, counseling and behavioral modification, as well as family support and training. Provides counseling for youths and works with Social Workers to plan regimes.
Requirements include
: A four year degree, in a human services field and one year of experience in social work or counseling, preferably with emotionally or mentally handicapped children; or a four year degree and three years experience in counseling or a related human service field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work, or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

YOUTH PROGRAM ASSISTANT II  - Grade 66   $13.06
Work with children at the County’s Youth Home. 

Requirements include
: High school graduation and three years of experience working with emotionally or mentally handicapped clients with emphasis on behavioral management, preferably with one year of such experience being with children and youth; OR an associate degree in a human services field and two years of experience; OR a four-year degree and one year of experience; OR a four-year degree in a human services field; OR equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must pass physical examination, background investigation and drug-screen analysis. Must possess valid North Carolina driver's license. May include nights and weekends.

YOUTH HOME MANAGER  - Grade 71  - $30985.50 annual salary
Responsible for the 24 hour management of the county Youth Home, such as staffing, scheduling, training, etc..
Requirements include
:  A four year degree, preferably in a human services field and two years of experience with emotionally or mentally disturbed clients; or an associate degree in a human services field and four years of experience working with emotionally or mentally handicapped clients, one year of which must have been in a group home for emotionally or mentally disturbed clients; or high school graduation and five years of experience working with emotionally or mentally handicapped clients, at least two years of such experience must have been working in a group home for emotionally or mentally disturbed clients. Must pass physical examination, background investigation and pre-employment drug-screening. Must possess valid North Carolina driver's license.

PROCESSING ASSISTANT III/OFFICE ASSISTANT III – Grade 62 - $11.16
Provide a variety of clerical support for a unit or group within the agency. 
Requirements include:  Must have a high school diploma or GED and one year of clerical experience. Must have public contact experience, good typing skills and computer literacy. Knowledge of Windows Environment, Microsoft Word and Excel.

PROCESSING ASSISTANT IV/OFFICE ASSISTANT IV – Grade 64 -  $12.07
Provide a variety of office and clerical tasks to support an administrative, program or technical operations. 
Requirements include:  Must have a high school diploma or GED and two years of clerical experience. Must have public contact experience, good typing skills and computer literacy. Knowledge of Windows Environment, Microsoft Word and Excel.

COMMUNITY SOCIAL SERVICES ASSISTANT – Grade 60 - $10.32
Works with the elderly, disabled and/or families with dependent children to provide training with the household management, personal care, and community living skills – or to assist the client to remain in their own home.  Duties include basic household tasks, ability to work with available community resources, assist in basic reading, writing and math, work with social workers, doctors, teachers and local businesses, and ability to report observations to supervisor. 
Requirements include
:  Must have a valid driver's license. Must demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least one year of experience performing tasks in the areas of home management, community services liaison and transportation.

CHILD SUPPORT ENFORCEMENT AGENT II – Grade 70 - $15.27
Involves the initiation and organization of Child Support Enforcement to include interviewing new Aid for Families with Dependent Children clients and some non-public clients to explain the program and obtain data.  Could also be involved in locating absent parents or establishing voluntary paternity or support through the court system. 
Requirements include
:  A four-year degree and six months of experience in eligibility, investigative, judiciary, or legal work that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the work; or an Associate's degree in business administration, human resources, law enforcement or closely related degree and two years experience in eligibility, investigative, judiciary, or legal work; or graduation from high school and three years experience in eligibility, investigative, judiciary, or legal work.   Computer literacy and keyboarding skills are required.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT I – Grade 67 -$13.58
Work involves a variety of administrative functions assisting a program or administrative official in carrying out their duties.  Involves a great deal of independent work. 
Requirements include
: High school graduation or equivalent & four years of secretarial or clerical/administrative/office management experience; or completion of a two year secretarial or clerical/administrative/office management experience; or completion of a four year program in a college or university preferably with major emphasis on coursework in business administration, public administration, or other related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Proficiency in Windows Environment and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Access).

ADMINISTRATIVE/BUDGET OFFICER I – Grade 71 - $ 15.89
Position is responsible for preparation and maintenance of annual budget and supervision of fiscal administrative unit for the agency which includes accounts payable, accounts receivable, human resources, and purchasing.
Requirements include
:  Graduation from a four-year college or university and one year of experience in personnel, budgeting, research, or administrative management, preferably involving participating in the planning and management of a business or governmental program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Computer literacy skills in Microsoft Windows environment are required, including Microsoft Word and Excel.Note: All social work degrees must be from an accredited school of social work or experience requirements will be extended. Also, required experience must be earned after degree is received.
